for Disklavier
Two Cartoons was written in 1989 as part of a series of works exploring the 17-tone tempered scale. For this scale, I composed a melody of 41 tones from the tone set of a non-octave-based scale, whose frequency is determined by its proximity to the fundamental tone D. This series undergoes various transformations in Two Cartoons, with the first movement devoted to the phenomenon of Nancarrow’s tempo proportions and layering, while the second movement, after a slow introduction, transitions into a middle section with fillings between the tones of the melody through rapidly accelerating scales leading to the climax. A coda with a pseudo-functional harmonization of the series through symmetrical chords concludes the composition. Both parts are characterized by a high degree of self-similarity.
I revised the original version in early 2006 and arranged it for Disklavier in twelve-tone tuning. Another “offspring” of Two Cartoons is the composition Riots (1992) for saxophone, electric guitar, and double bass.

Two Cartoons entstand 1989 als Komposition innerhalb einer Werkreihe, die sich der Erforschung der 17-tönigen temperierten Stimmung (17TET) widmet. Für diese Stimmung, die sich durch eine gegenüber 12TET leicht gestreckten Quinten charakterisiert ist, komponierte ich eine hierarchische Reihe aus 41 Tönen, deren Häufigkeit sich aus die durch den Quintenzirkel bestimmten Nähe zum Grundton d ergibt. Diese Reihe wird in Two Cartoons unterschiedlichen Transformationen unterworfen, wobei sich der erste Satz dem Phänomen Nancarrow’scher Tempoproportionen widmet, während der zweite Satz nach einer langsamen Einleitung in einen Mittelteil mit Ausstufungen der Reihentöne durch rasend schnelle auf den Höhepunkt zulaufende Tonleitern übergeht. Eine Coda mit einer pseudo-funktionalen Harmonisierung der Reihe durch symmetrische Akkorde schließt die Komposition ab. Die ursprüngliche Fassung wurde von mir Anfang 2006 überarbeitet und für Disklavier in zwölftöniger Stimmung eingerichtet. Ein weiterer „Abkömmling“ von Two Cartoons ist die Komposition Riots (1992) für Saxophon, elektrische Gitarre und Kontrabass.
