Tsunami setzt meine kompositorischen Bestrebungen fort, mathematisch-rationale Verfahren mit äußersten musikalischem Ausdruck zu verbinden. Dabei wurden zunächst Zahlenfolgen (meist aus den Produkten der Zahlen 3, 5, 7 und 11) generiert, die auf einem Algorithmus basieren, den Klarenz Barlow in den späten 70er-Jahren entwickelt hat. Diese zeichnen sich durch charakteristische Muster aus, die einen dramaturgischen Kontext bilden, nach dem sich die Form der Komposition orientiert. Die vierte der fünf Teile besteht etwa aus einer triolischen Figuration, die sich ständig nach oben schraubt, bis sie quasi an eine Decke stößt. Die wellenartige Struktur ist auch Anlass für den Namen Tsunami, und damit gleichzeitig eine Erinnerung an eine der größten Katastrophen der Menschheit in jüngster Zeit. Die Funktion der Elektronik liegt in der Verdichtung des Klangs und somit in der Intensivierung der musikalischen Dramatik.
Tsunami continues my compositional interest in combining mathematical and rational processes with utmost musical expression. The piece is based on number series which were mainly derived from the prime numbers 3, 5, 7 and 11 and generated by an algorithm Clarence Barlow (composition professor at UCSB) developed in the 1970s. They form very appealing patterns which set up the dramaturgic framework in which the music unfolds. The forth part, for instance, consists of a ternary figuration which continuously winds up until it hits a ceiling. Its wavy, undulating structure suggested the name Tsunami—maritime floods which, as we remember, will strike which great and destructive force. The role of live electronics is to densify the sound of the small Toy Piano and thus to intensify the musical drama.
