The instrumentation is flexible to a certain degree: English horn, trumpet and/or trombone may be replaced by French horns; the contrabassoon by contrabass tuba or double bass.

Klangmoraste entstand 1990 als mikrotonale, 17tönige Komposition für Kammerorchester. Das Stück, das im selben Jahr mit dem 1. Preis des Kompositionswettbewerbs des Ensemble Modern ausgezeichnet wurde, ist mit algorithmischen Mitteln generiert worden – wobei Verfahren in Analogie zu Transkriptions- und Translationsphänomenen der molekularen Biologie benutzt wurden.

Die Harmonik basiert auf symmetrischen Akkorden, die in ihrer Kombination von Quintfortschreitung und skalarer Bewegung eine Pseudo-Tonalität mit kadenzieller Wirkung erzeugen und auch ihre Dauernproportionen bestimmen.

Das Stück kann alternativ in 12töniger Stimmung gespielt werden.
