Carnage

Carnage for flute in c, bass clarinet, viola, cello and percussion (2016)
Dedicated to the Decibel Ensemble

This piece is loosely based on a screenplay by Yasmina Reza and Roman Polanski in which two couples, represented by flute and bass clarinet, as well as viola and cello, get into various interpersonal and interrelational conflicts. The percussion plays the role of an outside agent which will trigger certain reaction and occasionally emphasises aspects of the ensuing “carnage” between the four individuals.

Carnage employs real-time notation in MaxScore with cursors running over emojis to be interpreted by the musicians. As the cursors can move individually at different speeds, non-linear process is being achieved in this composition.
